Canned Gods : a typical afternoon in the backyard in Phoenix, Arizona

Ce projet, initié au Western Front de Vancouver en 1996, est entièrement construit à partir d'une banque de sons pré-enregistrés sur disques compacts. Ces sons, utilisés principalement par l'industrie du cinéma et de la télévision, constituent un véritable inventaire de l'imaginaire sonore d'une culture donnée : ainsi, une librairie de sons américaine sera très différente de son équivalent anglais ou australien... Canned Gods est une tentative de tracer un portrait des États-Unis à partir des sons qu'ils ont eux-mêmes choisis.

This project, which began at the Western Front in Vancouver in 1996, is entirely made from sound samples taken from a commercial sound effects cd library. These sounds, used mainly by the television and cinema industries, are like an inventory of the sounds of a given culture. Thus, an American sound effects library will be very different from an English or Australian one... Canned Gods is an attempt to draw a portrait of the United States using the sounds Americans choose as theirs.
